Monica Abbott and her 'Riseball'
A great debut for you pitching three scoreless innings on the first night against Great Britain.
Yeah it was important for us to come out and show that we are ready and make a statement. It was cool to start cos I’m usually in a relief role.
This is your 2nd year on the national team. Is there a special incentive this year because of last year’s result?
Oh yeah. Last year was a bit of a wake-up call. Just to find out that everybody is out to get us. We had to come out very quickly this year.
What’s the softball scene like in Tennessee?
It’s pretty good. Softball is really growing there and the kids really seem to love it—and they’re who is going to carry the sport in the future.
As a pitcher I’d like to ask you…are there different pitches in softball like there are in baseball?
Sure…but they’re a bit different. There’s riseballs, dropballs, change-ups, curves, screwballs and all sorts of pitches. Of course you can modify all of those to be off-speed—such as an off-speed dropball or off-speed curve.
What’s your best pitch?
I think I’d have to say the riseball. But it depends on the day. It depends on who we’re facing and what pitch would be my best option. The key thing is to understand who you’re throwing to.
Are there certain pitches that are more strenuous on the arm than others?
Probably not. If you don’t throw it right a dropball can be tough on your arm. But that pretty much goes for any pitch—if you throw it wrong you’re going to hurt yourself.
Do you consult scouting reports on all the opponents?
We do. We get them at our meetings where we go over our opponent’s tendencies. It sure helped the first night.
Hi Monica,
My name is Lexie N. VAn Houten

It is lia again. Man oh MAN! Again i love to watch you pitch. Matter of fact I just seen you pitching with team usa. You threw the crap out of the ball. They couldn't catch up to your ruthless rise ball. I just thought I had to talk with you again. BEST OF LUCK, YOUR GIRL

Hey Monica, I am writing to ask you a question. I payed softball myself for about 25 years and had to quit because of a female surgery. I then coached my daughter and now I am coaching my grandaughter who is 15. She has pitched for 5 years now and is pretty good. She is a freshman pitchind on the varsity team now. She knows how to throw a curve ball and a changeup. And now I want her to learn to throw a rise ball. Could you send me some tips on how to start teaching her. She really likes watching you pitch and so do I. I would appreciate it very much. She is hoping to get a scholarshipto play in collage. She is smaller than a lot of girls her age, but she is a very good player. She is a first string pitcher. And she makes all A's & B's in school. She is so determined to play in collage. She said if she could throw a riseball like you do she would be so happy. She averages anywhere from 6 to 13 strikeouts a game. So we would appreciate some tips to help her learn to throw a riseball. Your Fans from Arkansas, Melissa & Mary

Hey wow I can't believe I can can actually email you. I admire you so much your awesome. I mean untouchable and it was no surprise that you beat Cat Osterman and got the number one pitching spot on the USA team. WOW!!!!! I'm a seventh grader and I'm a pitcher as well. I'd concider myself pretty good. I have three different pitches the palm change, fastball, and my favorite the KNUCKLE. I'm trying to find yet another pitch to learn what should I learn Monica? Did You ever go through times while growing up in your pitching years where girls try to beat you by hurting you in an upset way and just messing around but she gets to rough? Please answer this email!!!!!!!

hey monica,
i'm your biggest fan! i live in west tennessee. i have came to some of your games with my old travel team. the west tennessee waylons fillies. we came to the one where yall played alabama. you probably dont remember me but i got a picture of you and me and we blew it up and i put it on my wall. i play on a new travel team now the 12U american eagles from lexington. megan rhodes, kenora posey, tonya callahan, and shannon doepking came to lexington tennessee and did a clinic. i went and had alot of fun. i'm eleven years old and i can pitch 54mph. i have played softball everysince i was 4 years old. i started pitchin when i was 8. i'm takin lessons from amy fuller who used to play college softball and then she coached but i have laerned alot from her. i have learned how to move my pitch to different sides of the plate and how high to pitch to different batters. i have learned my change-up and drop-ball and pretty much perfected them. i am learning my rise-ball and i know thats your best pitch so i was wondering if you could give me a couple of tips on the spin cause thats what im havin some problems with. im not just a pitcher though. i can bunt on either sides of the plate, drag bunt, slap bunt, and power slap. i am also a power hitter but most of the time i bunt or something like that just to get on cause im lead-off batter. i also play 1st base, 2nd base, i tried short stop but that didnt really work out, 3rd base and out field. i go to west carroll elementary and i keep my grades up. i have never made anything below an A. i want so much to go to the university of tennessee and be the first string pitcher, but if i could just be on the team i would be happy. youre probably wonderin why where i put my name i put bananah-duck beside it. thats my nickname and they say bananah because it rhymes with hannah but i dont kno why they put duck in there. maybe its because they are both yellow. lol. my birthday is december 23rd and it would be the best gift if you could e-mail me back those tips on the rise ball. thanks
youre biggest fan,
hannah (bananah-duck)

Monica,
You are headed to the 2008 Olympics this coming year, congratulations. Will you in the near future have a website, guest appearances, camps, etc? I am also looking into running a two-day camp for youth girls from grades 4-12 in the upstate NY area and looking for either a professional woman player to run the camp or join in with their peers.

Hey Monica-
I have a niece who is 13 and is following in your footsteps. You mean everything to her. She is a softball pitcher on a local team and also does travel ball. She eats, sleeps and talks you. I was wondering if there was a chance that I could possibly get an autographed ball or jersey from you to give to her. This is the only thing I would imagine that she would treasure for life and give her more inspiration to hit the big league.
Thank you,
militarymama

Hi,I have watched with some amazement at how well you seem to throw that riseball.I have been pitching for some years now and still can't seem to get it.Back in the early days it didn't bother me so much because I could really crank the fastball and it had some movement on it. However now that I'M 56 I'm still pitching in the old timers league but some of the steam has gone from the ol'#1. I would like any advice on how to throw a good rise.I think my mechanice are correct, but I could be mistaken.HELP!!!!!! CB

Dear Monica,
Congratulations on how far you have come not only in softball but in life. You are a huge inspiration to me. This is not however because of how good you are but rather how you carry and present yourself. I have noticed the cross that you wear around your neck. I hope that you know that God is there with you in each and every game chearing you on. He gave you an amazing gift and is glad that you are positivly sharing it with the world. I wanted to thank you for the positive and encouraging things that you often say on TV. The fun you seem to have and the way you care for your team mates helps remind me why I love playing the sport. You probably won't get the chance to read this before your game tomorrow but i would like to wish you luck anyways. You can bet that I will be watching and chearing you on. You, understandably, are a hero to many around the country. My wish for you is that you enjoy the days and the time you have with your team, embrace all the gifts and tallents God has given you, and remember that we truley preform for an audience of one. Good luck in all you will face in the comming days, years, and in your life. I love watching you play and am excited to hopefully watch you lead the Lady Vols to victory.
All My Love,

Hi Monica,
I am Jennifer and I am a 12 year old pitcher, pitching average 50mph. I was wondering if you have advice for me for keeping my wieght back. I've seen you pitch and really, you're better than Jennie Finch, but you lean forward at first and than you pitch a fast strike. How do you do that?

Monica,
I just like to say that you are such a wonderful player & I enjoy watching you play softball. I really didn't think I would get interested in fast-pitch until I saw you play with the Lady Vols. I only watch the Lady Vols in basketball (which is my #1 team) so just one day you were on tv & I just got hooked on it with your fast balls & how you put your all into the game! Well Congrats to you & the USA team.
PS keep up the good work!!
