Sick Rides

There are a ridiculous number of exotic time trial bikes tooling up and down Alii Drive this week.  Triathletes' love affair with carbon and Kevlar continues to grow, and here at the Ford Ironman Triathlon World Championships composite frames are clearly the racers' top choice.  Let's take a look at a couple of the sick rides that we spotted today...

Navy SEAL Mitch Hall, 32, has returned to Kona with one of Ironman's most popular bikes: a Cervelo P3 Carbon.  But, unlike most athletes, Mitch wasn't satisfied with the standard black & red graphics.

Seal_bike_2 Instead this winner of the Bronze Star decided to show a little Navy Pride with a head-turning custom paint job.

Hall went 9:39:40 last year, with a quick 4:55 bike split.  At that speed, this might be the only place where you can get a good look at his blue and yellow rocket.

I especially like the "Sea Land Air" displayed on his front wheel!

Another standout was the newest creation by the engineers at QR, with a bit of help from Quintana Roo founder Dan Empfield: the 2007 Lucero. Lucero_07_2

This hand-built multi-layered carbon beauty has some striking features, like a vertical vent in the  front fork, claimed to improve aerodynamics by "relieving spoke air compression" (if you say so), and an incredibly clean and slippery shape.

This particular version was outfitted with deep rim wheels and bars by Blackwell Research, and Zero Gravity's featherlight brakes.

The Lucero certainly looks fast.  Look for pro Chris Legh to racing on a very similar machine in Ironman's 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, FL.
